Lead Internal Audit function for Mountain America Credit Union. Set the overall strategy of the Internal Audit Team and the execution of the annual internal audit plan. Develop strategies and tactics to validate reliability of controls through Three Lines Governance Model. Act as organizational liaison for the Supervisory Committee.

  • Sets Internal Audit team strategic direction and sets Internal Audit strategic plan horizon of 3-5 years.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive framework to rank/prioritize audit focus areas, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives, external regulatory bodies and the Three Lines Governance model.
  • Proactively support, enhance, and build a culture that embraces change management and can evolve risk management and internal controls.
  • Directs the successful execution of the audit process including the planning, scheduling, coordinating, reviewing, and reporting of the work of the audit team.
  • Provides advanced expertise in auditing standards/requirements, and performance criteria; ensure a complete understanding of all aspects of each audit engagement.
  • Supports and coordinates with the Risk Management Teams in the review and evaluation of risks and controls.
  • Develops strong working relationships with key stakeholders by regular communicating and addressing challenges with senior leadership to determine appropriate actions and encourage collaboration across departments.
  • Evaluate controls already in place to determine gaps and communicate gaps to the Risk Management Team.
  • Analyzes, prepares, and submits annual Internal Audit Team financial budget based on assessed needs after Supervisory Committee approval.
  • Oversees third-party engagements engaged by First or Second line when independent scoping and review is required or to support execution of approved audit plan.
  • Communicates and reviews results of Internal Audit risk assessment and audit plan with Supervisory Committee.
  • Assumes responsibility with managers for outlining and developing risk assessments and annual audit plan.
  • Ensures the Internal Audit Team communicates accurately, objectively, clearly, concisely, constructively, completely, timely, and effectively with stakeholders.
  • Oversees, directs, and manages daily workflow of directors and managers to ensure audit schedule is maintained. Develop and oversee maintenance of Internal Audit function methodologies, including programs, procedures, and alignment with Three Lines Governance Model.
  • Remains aware of changes and updates to IIA Standards and Guidance and regularly develops action plans to accommodate these changes.
  • Reviews or oversee review of work papers prepared by Internal Audit Team for adherence to internal procedures and IIA Standards and provides appropriate feedback, as necessary.
  • Reviews and approves engagement-level audit risk assessments, engagement-level audit plans and engagement audit final and follow-up reports.
  • Assume responsibility for development of team members into subject matter experts to enable better audit capabilities.
  • Serves as point of contact for the team with regulatory examiners and external auditors and may serve in an advisory capacity
  • Coordinate fulfillment of requested items list for the team provided by regulatory examiners.
  • Coordinates assistance with external audit firm for annual audit procedures, as necessary.
  • Serves as primary liaison for Team with various Second Line Teams and ensures regular contact with those Teams. Oversee liaison relationships with other groups.
  • Complies with all regulations as required by law, including but not limited to Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC, FACT Act, GLBA, Regulation CC (funds availability), Regulation DD (TIS) and other regulations as required by law as it relates to the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Experience

  • 10+ years of internal audit experience or other related fields, preferably in the financial services sector.
  • 8+ years of leadership experience overseeing audit team with oversight/responsibility of but not limited to credit, lending, IT, and risk audits. Ability to recruit, engage and coach employee performance.
  • Understanding of IIA standards, including IPPF, GTAG, and other practice guidance.
  • Experience and deep understanding of Three Lines Governance Model.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with NCUA, ONEs, other mid-market governing bodies.
  • Agile auditing approach preferred.

Education

Education must be from an accredited institution.

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, mathematics, statistics, or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

CIA, CPA, CFSA, CISA, CRMA, or other comparable auditing certification required

Managerial Responsibility

Has leadership/managerial responsibilities that are direct or through work leaders or assistants, typically with a subordinate group of 3 to 10 employees. Estimates personnel needs and assigns work to meet these needs. Supervises, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned staff. Recommends candidates for employment, conducts performance evaluations and salary reviews for assigned staff, and applies company policy.

Computer/Office Equipment Skills

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Experience with data analytic tools and techniques
  • Knowledge of computer-assisted audit techniques preferred

Language Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly express ideas, methodology, results and recommendations verbally, in writing and through insightful reports and graphic illustrations regarding business and technology needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to document outcomes and present information in a manner appropriate for key stakeholders and all levels of the organization.

Other Skills & Abilities

  • Communicate, engage, and execute in a manner that builds trusted partnerships with regulatory bodies.
  • Advanced understanding of accounting principles and COSO framework.
  • Advanced understanding of information technology and security risks and controls (including COBIT framework).
  • Advanced understanding of applicable regulations, as outlined in Essential Duties and Responsibilities above.
  • Understanding of credit union data system and ability to use a computer and software applications.
  • Ability to think critically and recognize and analyze problems, improprieties, and opportunities for improvement and communicate clear expectations to Team.
  • Conduct essential duties and responsibilities in an ethical manner, demonstrating integrity, honesty, courage, and due professional care.
  • Maintain an impartial and unbiased attitude when performing Internal Audit services and making decisions.
